This Old Photo of Sittingbourne A2 Canterbury Road was taken around 1910. The houses are very similar today although the front walls have changed and there is a lot more traffic!
The location is Snipeshill between Murston Road and Vincent Road

Photo of the View looking north down Skinner Street from the High Street. The sign seen on the left appears to be Post Office and the Grand Cinema is visible on the corner of Jeffery Street in the middle distance.
The Prince Albert Public House stood on the corner of Gillingham High Street and Skinner Street.
Much of this area has changed beyond recognition in the last 100 years with the Grand Cinema/Grand Picture Variety Theatre demolished in the 1960s and many of the building frontages being completely redesigned.
The intricate stonework above the post office still appears to exist but now over a beauty salon and takeaway - perfect sign of the times!

This is the same location in 2025 - a bit different now!

These photos were part of a collection passed to me by Tony Carruthers. I've recently also received the original glass plate negatives for them which are very special! The glass plates included views of Rainham as well as other parts of Kent which is where these Teynham photos came from. They date from around 1907-1910 and the images would likely have been postcards originally.
The area was known as Green Street or Lynsted at the time depending on the side of the A2 that the buildings were located.
Green Street/Teynham approx 1907

The photo below shows buildings that are mainly still in existence today. The only one that has been demolished is the Co-op store but a new Co-op is in its place.

These photos were taken after the Motney Hill Sewage/Wastewater treatment works was extended and rebuilt in the 1950s. They appear to show local residents being shown around during an open day.
Do you recognise anyone in the photos? If so please get in touch
