In the November 1972 issue of Action Forum it was stated that 10 pubs or alehouses were closed in the Rainham Parish boundaries between the Boer War and the First World War (so before 1918). Of these three were around the Otterham Quay area.
The Lord Nelson closed around 1905 and no known records exist of it. The Anchor & Hope near Otterham Quay was closed and finally demolished in 1921. The Lord Stanley closed as a pub in 1930 and in 1972 was a general store opposite the entrance to Otterham Quay.
Much further along the road in Lower Rainham stood another beer house, the Jolly Gardener. After it closed the building became a Post Office. Another pub that closed was the Kent Volunteers in Station Road next to the train station. The Kent Volunteers pub was a wooden building demolished in 1920. (note: the original AF article states the Kent Volunteers was demolished in 1906. Other information since shows this was the date it closed and that it was actually demolished in 1920 after lying empty and being vandalised)
