While doing some research about Rainham I found this article about pubs that were demolished for the Chatham town centre road scheme in 1972 which created the ring road and Pentagon centre.
The Chatham pubs that were closed and then knocked down were:
- Imperial Forces
- Constitutional Club
- Eagle Tavern
- Naval & Military Arms
- Coachmakers Arms
- Old George
- The Swan
- Royal Sovereign
- White Lion
It seems incredible that so many Chatham pubs could be demolished in one go and still have plenty left behind but it shows how many pubs were supported by the Naval dockyard being in Chatham. This was well before the Dockyard was closed in 1984 so wasn't as result of poor trade.
The Little Crown below wasn't demolished in 1972 but was closed in 2010 as this photo shows
