Thank you for these photos. They brought back many memories. I was born in Post Box Cottages in Lower Rainham Road in 1945 and lived in the Army and Navy pub for several years. Kent at that time was idyllic. I found you now while searching for photos of the 1953 floods which although they were 60 years ago are still fresh in my mind.

I often wonder what happened to all the children that I spent my childhood with - Pricilla Webley, Bingy Elwin - and especially one of the Newstead boys who saved my life when I fell into a drainage canal on Motney Hill Road and could not get out. We all used to play down the old docks, in the abandoned cement factory and in the old chalk pit. Places that would terrify people now. It was another time in another world.
